On Meet the Press this morning, the roundtable that included Mary Matalin, David Gregory, Maureen Dowd, and Paul Gigot, discussed the importance, or lack of importance, of the Cheney hunting incident. David Gregory, the White House Press correspondent, apologized for the on and off camera fit he threw with Scott McCllelan, noting his wife made him do it. Matalin duked it out with both Gregory and Dowd at several points because the former noted the bias the press has towards this administration. Dowd kept trying to excuse that because they are so secretive, and David hid behind the “it’s my job” argument. Matalin, who finally got fed up with Gregory and the press hiding their bias, said that “you [the press] went on a jihad”. Thank you, somebody had to say it, and I am glad it was Mary Matalin.

Mary Matalin just showed why we [Republicans] win nearly every debate.

Maureen Dowd and David Gregory had no chance. Dowd keep trying to make Cheney seem like a robot that sits behind his desk drinking the blood of babies and Gregory got his hypocrisy shoved down his throat. I started laughing when Matilin pointed out that if Gregory was called and was the first to be given the shooting story, he wouldn’t say “No, lets’ go through the process, lets’ call the press pool let’s get everyone involved.”

Gotta love the liberal insanity. If that’s not a coherent argument, then I don’t know what is.

The fact of the matter is the press is fuming they did not get the story first, and this is just another opportunity to get this administration.

As much as I was frustrated with them at the beginning, I really don’t care now. The press just keeps showing their bias and how out of touch they are…and America can see it; look at the latest polls concerning the accident…harldy anyone thinks it is a story, yet the press is yelling “fire” where there is none. Just let them keep showing their true colors.

Funny that it was Dowd that appears to be a robot that sits behind a desk drinking something.

The funniest part, I think Gregory towards then end there, much to his chagrin, realizes Mary won and she’s right…no matter how mad the press is or unfair they think they’re treated…the story was hugely overblown and the press yet again looks dumb.

And really, it must really suck to be Maureen Dowd.

Did anyone notice that Dowd siad that she has been on many Republican hunting trips?? OH Maureen, Dems are not allowed to hunt? At least not in public!

Reminds me of Bernard Goldbergs theory on bias in the media. Goldberg excuses the behavior as unintentional explaining that it is so inbred and institutional that “journaliists” like Gregory do not begin to see it. It really irritates me that we continue to see these huge time lags of 18 hours and 24 hours and etc through recent history (at least in my lifetime).. and do you think that a regular citizen would have been able to tell a sheriff or deputy to just go away? Never! They ALL think they are above the law. I am not pleased about how any of them act in times of crisis of ANY scale. I really don’t care to hear a political ADVISER since she has a slanted point of view and the actions of the reporters are galling at best. The big difference that is apparent is the maturity level of the participants.

Maureen is a whiner, cannot say it nicer than that. She is very well compensated (as many of her counterparts) and her rights, etc are not violated by the evil Bush administration. You would think she would smile once in a while and not have that smarmy attitude.

David Gregory is just saving face best he can. With 24 hour news cycles you have to milk any story for all it’s worth.

Mary Matlin and the other guest at least seemed to present logical, well-thought out arguements. She is married to the other side so between them they certainly have a nice business going.

Actually DruidBros – lets take your “Cult” accusation step-by-step shall we?

    ~

1.) The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law.

When recently asked “Who was the leader of the Democratic Party” Harry Reid replied that that was an unfair question. Dems definitely not a cult by this standard. They don’t even HAVE a leader.

2.) Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished.

Again Dems are no cult here – in fact I’m not sure you even qualify as a Democrat these days unless you doubt America.

3.) Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, and debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group and its leader(s).

The new media is definitely making big inroads. Conservative Talk Radio dominates, and Fox regularly smashes CNN in the ratings – I guess that does mean the Dems don’t have a monopoly in the News Media anymore. Nope – Dems not a cult by this standard either then.

4.) The leadership dictates, sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act, and feel (for example, members must get permission to date, change jobs, marry—or leaders prescribe what types of clothes to wear, where to live, whether or not to have children, how to discipline children, and so forth).

Leadership? What leadership? I thought you Dems didn’t have leadership. Was Reid lying?

5.) The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader(s) and members (for example, the leader is considered the Messiah, a special being, an avatar—or the group and/or the leader is on a special mission to save humanity).

Nope – Dems sure aren’t elitist. Bill Clinton should have been able to do a LOT better than Monica Lewinsky.

6.) The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society.

True – Dems are much more diverse than just “Us versus Them”. They also have “Black versus White”, “Rich versus Poor”, “Environmentalists versus the Economy”, “Gays versus Straights”... can’t pigeon-hole the Dems here that’s for sure.

7.) The leader is not accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations).

Again – leader? What leader? Heeeeeere leader leader leader leader

8.) The group teaches or implies that its supposedly exalted ends justify whatever means it deems necessary. This may result in members’ participating in behaviors or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical before joining the group (for example, lying to family or friends, or collecting money for bogus charities).

I can’t say that any of the Democrats ends are “Exalted” by any means. I guess that means they wouldn’t fall into this category either.

9.) The leadership induces feelings of shame and/or guilt iin order to influence and/or control members. Often, this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion.

I come in peace. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER!

10.) Subservience to the leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and friends, and radically alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the group.

    ZZzzzzzz…..

11.) The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members.

Actually, I’m not sure there isn’t a single segment of society that the Dems haven’t villified – so no, they don’t seem preoccupied in this area.

12.) The group is preoccupied with making money.

If Howard Deans fund raising numbers are anything to go by – this certainly doesn’t apply.

13.) Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities.

Come to think of it those protest marches aren’t really drawing the same amount of crowds they did in the 60’s are they?

14.) Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members.

Hey now – San Fransisco can only hold so many people!

15.) The most loyal members (the “true believers?) feel there can be no life outside the context of the group. They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves or others if they leave (or even consider leaving) the group.

I don’t think most rational, sane, and thinking people there is much life inside the Democratic Party.

    So nope.

Dems are definitely NOT a cult.

I watched the whole show and there was Mary Matalin working the Cheney approach to media while the four other people tried not to laugh in her face.

This whole spin them silly tactic just doesn’t cut it anymore. But I can see why Mr Cheney would hire someone like Ms Matalin. He’d like her style. It just that it doesn’t work anymore. Stonewalling, lying and blaming the victim is not seen as being strong. It’s seen as being cowardly.

Cheney has become the laughing stock and it’s time for him to go. With a 27% approval rating the office of VP is being wasted on a liability. The VP should be someone who could actually beat Hillary.

What you fail to realize is that the position of Vice President has seldom, if ever, been relevant. Theodore Roosevelt was actually offered the Vice President’s spot because others in the party wanted him somewhere that he wouldn’t make so much noise. Then McKinley goes and ruins the whole thing by getting himself shot and Teddy becomes the President, and not a bad one at that. The point is, he was placed there with the intent of marginalizing him. So it’s kind of tough to “waste” the VP slot when there’s not really much you could do to even validate it.

I don’t think there has ever been, certainly not in my lifetime, a VP as powerful and “valid” as Cheney.
He is central to this admin’s policy.

The problem with what I’ll call the Matalin approach, is that it has worked, but they still keep using it because (I’d guess) it suits Cheney’s character.

For example, the first tactic was to blame poor Whittington,

    Katharine Armstrong:

“Whittington “came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn’t signal them or indicate to them or announce himself …

Then Scotty McClellan builds on the talking point, naturally…

“I don’t know all the specifics about it, but I think Mrs. Armstrong spoke publicly about how this incident occurred. And if I recall, she pointed out that the protocol was not followed by Mr. Whittington, when it came to notifying the others that he was there. And so, you know, unfortunately these types of hunting accidents happen from time to time.”

    Then Matalin chimes in:

“The vice president was concerned. He felt badly, obviously. On the other hand, he was not careless or incautious or violate any of the [rules]. He didn’t do anything he wasn’t supposed to do.”

When this didn’t work, Matalin comes on Meet The Press and tries the same spin, but this time blaming the press for not swallowing their spin, hook line and sinker, as they were expected to.

The thing is that this play doesn’t work anymore. But it’s the only one Matalin (and Cheney) know, and like.

About physical courage I don’t know the answer. But all available evidence suggests that the Mr. Cheney is a man of deep moral cowardice. Makes a mistake and shoots his friend; blames the friend. Only he won’t do it directly. So he gets underlings to do it for him. Forced to speak out publicly, he appears before a ringer-journalist guaranteed not to press uncomfortable questions.

If death rays could have come out of Maureen’s eyes following Matlin’s replies, David Gregory would have been sitting next to a smouldering pile of burning flesh and bones on the roundtable. This seems to be a standard problem for the most partisan of the New York Times columnists when they get out of the cocoon of the op-ed page’s self-congratualtory club. While the more reasonable Tom Friedman can hold his own against more conservative commentators, Dowd and Paul Kurgman—who appeared to be expecting Bill O’Reilly to attack him with a chainsaw when they were on Russert’s CNBC show together last year—don’t seem to be able to cope very well with going face to face with critics of their statements.
